Money Makers

On and off for several years now, I have tried to give my children allowance.
Any of you who have tried to do this may have found the same thing I did.

1) I didn't want to give them money at the end of the week "just cuz".
2) Until recently, they weren't really old enough/tall enough, (you can add the adjective) enough to do much.
3) When I started giving in to their pleads and begs to make money, giving them money for making their beds (when I expect that with or without allowance) seemed silly.

I tried coming up with "Chore Charts".
I then learned that I didn't want to make the time to keep track of all of that nonsense.

On the few feeble attempts where I actually did keep the chart, and they succeeded, I never could remember to get the "one's" to pay them.
I mean really...who has a bunch of ones just laying around in their wallet? Certainly not me.

Then. The other week. The idea came to me....

Normal adult humans go to work and get paid - for the normal things that the boss expects them to do. Carry that over to the children and you get: it's o.k. to pay the children for making their beds and putting away dirty clothes - the normal and expected things).

I mean really, if Bryan went to work and did what was normal and expected and then didn't get paid - we would have a big problem with Mr. Boss Man. And he would probably cut bait and go where someone would pay him for what was normal and expected.
Aren't bonuses for doing things over and above?

So - I devised a new system. In the two weeks I've done it I have loved it! And I think Bryan has too.

It basically goes like this...

I have a chart of the 5 days of the working week ('cause most adult humans get the weekends off too, right? That's where overtime and bonuses can come into play) - but enough about weekends - back to the 5 working days of the week.

Each day has a little pocket (picture coming up) for me to put two paper strips into. Each paper strip represents 50 cents (feel free to make your amount larger or smaller - 50 cents just seemed natural for my family). These paper strips were cut from index cards, have "50 c" and their initials on each.

At any given time, for any given thing that strikes my fancy, I can take away a 50 cent strip. I have taken them away for such infractions as having to tell them too many times to do something (like getting teeth brushed or not getting into bed pronto), not making the bed in the mornings, not putting away dirty clothes, leaving the dishes on the table, etc, etc.

I have found myself saying things like, "If you don't (insert activity) I think I'll need to get 50 cents to pay myself for doing it." etc, etc. And man, my 2nd child is crazy motivated by the dollar. He has had a stellar clean room this week.

They have each had the occasion to lose up to $1.50 so far. I do,however allow them the opportunity for earning the money back, 50 cents at a time, if they do some of those "over and above" things.

So far, both weeks, the children have earned all 5 dollars. I have gone a little easy on earning them back while I try to get them used to this reward system. And while they begin trusting that I really am going to pay them this go around. You should see me scrambling on Friday's to go get the money to pay them.

Now, even though I don't have money slots for the weekends, if they still don't make their beds and put up dirty clothes - I'll take from next week's money.

So far this has really been a helpful process. It encourages them to really do those things that they're supposed to be doing anyway, it motivates them to do more, and they really are getting some cash from me for a job well done.

Here are some pictures of the pouches. They are taped to their doors. I basically took a piece of construction paper, folded it up on itself, used a stapler to staple seams for each day and then cut the strips from index cards.

Below is Julia's. I have pulled up the 2nd strip for each day a bit so that you can see each day has two. Legare's is what they look like all nice and neat and tucked behind one another. And though each day has two - I can pull from tomorrow if you are already out of today's money. Wow does that get them.

I shouldn't

But I will.
I apologize in advance.

Years ago a friend of ours introduced us to the animated television show "South Park". He happened to show it to us because of the "Christmas Special" they were airing that featured a piece of poo named "Hankey". The crazy creators of South Park had created a whole snappy song about this poo that comes visiting. It was quite hilarious. I hadn't thought about it much in years. I hadn't even watched South Park since then. No really.

Then....I'm in the local Piggly Wiggly with my cute 9 year old daughter. As we were walking past all of the Holiday candy on display as we entered the store, she exclaimed that I should look at the cute, chocolate snowman. Of course she was talking about the beautiful, foil wrapped Lindt chocolate snowman. But as I approached to take a look (we both really like chocolate), this is what I saw instead of the beautiful foil wrapped Lindt version.

And dern it if I didn't think of Hankey when I saw this. I bought three for Christmas presents. One for Bryan. One for Dad. And one for my brother Joe. I then promptly came home and reminded everyone about Hankey so they would remember him and have a great laugh when he was opened on Christmas Day.

And in case you aren't aware of the song and the man known as Hankey...I have embedded the video. Enjoy - have a great laugh! We all did. And by the way...he tasted great!

7 Random Facts

I'm supposed to do "Tag, You're It". But because I don't know enough people with blogs to tag, I'm just posting my facts here without tagging anyone. You're supposed to tag seven people, but you are welcome to take the initiative to do it yourself on my comments or on your blog for all to read.

1 - I used to be organized, and I don't know what has happened but that has slowly gone away. I keep feeling like I'm on the verge of getting it back though. We'll see.

2 - I sang in my high school's show choirs. We put on three large performances a year and the older choir (Jr's and Sr's) competed in a Young Americans National Invitational Show Choir competition in LA my junior year in high school and placed 2nd. The other day I was looking at pictures from this and realized I had taken my picture with Marg Helgenberger (at the time an actress with "Ryan's Hope" soap opera, but you now see her in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" as Catherine Willows). She was just walking down the street and allowed us to take a picture with her.

3 - My brother has battled the dreaded MRSA "Super bug" 3 times since March of this year (but that's his fact, not mine, isn't it?).

4 - At the Choir Competition mentioned above I also met Dolly Parton in LAX after we landed (super sweet, and super tiny). Also in LAX on the way home I was purchasing magazines and found myself standing next to Eddie Murphy. A few of us were able to snap pictures with him sporting a big smile, but his girlfriend was none too pleased. She was on our flight back to Charleston.

5 - As a cheerleader in high school our head football coach was invited to coach the North vs. South high school football game (North Carolina all stars vs. South Carolina all stars). Our cheerleading squad was invited to cheer. We were on television for this. I think the South won.

6 - I'm pretty good at 80's trivia and I love to play Lingo Plus on gsn (d0t) com.

7 - I really love animals. I even feel bad killing cockroaches and spiders - but I do kill them.
But since you probably knew that...how 'bout....I would really love to act. In anything. A play, a commercial, something. (Bet you couldn't tell that by #'s 2, 4, and 5). Because I like to act, I said yes to playing Santa Clause at the children's old pre-school this year. I had a ball!!! I want to do more! (Bet you couldn't tell that by #'s 2, 4, and 5. And I don't want to do it for fame or attention - I just enjoy doing it and I like when people are laughing. Laughing is one of my favorite things to do.

Tag - you're It.

Standard Operating Procedure

Anytime I'm on the laptop, so is Felix. Here's a picture from back in the summer showing what his standard operating mode is when anyone is on the laptop. He saves this behavior for me and the kids. Bryan wouldn't be so accommodating. As I'm typing currently, I'm slightly contorted to the right to give him room. I did manage to get him onto my thigh this morning instead of the keyboard.

I always try to claim my space, but he never seems to care. He just readjusts. The only thing that would persuade him to leave would be to physically remove him. But he's too warm and purr-y to do that. What you call the true Warm Fuzzy. Deep down I really don't mind. And the kids don't either.
